Firstly, what is VOIP? Is it Skype? video messaging like MSN or Gmail?
Voip, as is usual in the computer world is an acronym standing for Voice Over Internet Protocol. This means that you can have a voice connection using your internet line. We’ve been doing this since the late 90′s so what’s new?
Well firstly more and more of us are doing it which accounts for the degradation in quality experienced using Skype in the afternoon and evenings when the USA is awake. Secondly, it is possible now to do everything and possibly a bit more than most traditional PBX (Personal branch Exchange) switchboards offer.
More importantly it is now possible to achieve call quality equal to or sometimes better than that offered by ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network). Even more importantly, it is possible to have multiple calls active on the same ‘line’.
So why are most traditional telecom companies so anti VOIP? Possibly the same reason petrol companies are so anti electric vehicles. The investment in technology required for a traditional PBX in most companies is huge and we’ve sort of got used to it. ‘If you’re a serious business you wouldn’t risk your business on Skype would you?’ And all VOIP is just like Skype! WRONG!
We can point to many businesses that have taken to decision to get rid of the ‘tin’ and move to hosted telephony or VOIP, saving themselves considerable money. There is little inclination to go back to PBX, any more than a modern van driver would revert to horse and cart.
In fact most of the PBX manufacturers are now offering a VOIP connection in their switchboard…….at a cost! That’s the only way they can tie their customers in to using their hideously expensive handsets!
So what are the problems with VOIP?
Usually ignorance of how to buy and of the conditions necessary to get the best quality out of your system and a stupidly complex ‘dashboard’ that makes setting up simple call handling really difficult. To this end we’re setting up partners in the IT support community who can pass on their wisdom to ensure you get crystal clear telephony and the best deal on phones to suit your business.
at http://www.babblevoice.com/wiki we’re happy to share with you exactly how to do this and which phones will work best from free soft phones to desk phones, receptionist modules and even applications to use on your Iphone or Android phone. We’ll also put you in touch with a local partner.
